Day 16... The End of Mod/Modge Podge

It began with the idea of adding color to the drawers that hold the materials in our Writing Center. With a fair amount of frustration and tears, I completed the first half of the set. (You can read about that "adventure" HERE.) For the last few days, I have been fearful that I would never finish "the bottom half" of the shelving because Modge Podge and I simply cannot get along...

But I couldn't get rid of the drawer set altogether. And, if you know me at all, you know I could never have half clear drawers and half colored drawers. This unit sits directly across from my teaching area. I would have to look at it every day. No, it was inevitable. I had to finish that second set of drawers.

The lower portion of the shelving unit only has four drawers--but two of those are "tall drawers" and, no matter what trick I tried, I could not get the paper to lie straight. It was crooked. Or it was bubbly. Or it was bumpy. Or it was crooked, bumpy and bubbly.

At one point, I thought I was having vision problems. But, no, I had just manged to get Modge Podge on my eyelashes! (Pause for a moment, and think of all of the substances you have used to remove adhesives. Then wonder: How many of those say "Avoid contact with eyes." Thus, my dilemma!)

This is the last drawer that I completed. It took five (or was it six?) tries to get the paper straight! And just before I took the picture, I thought I needed a little extra 'Podge to seal up a gap. The result: I ripped the paper right off the drawer with the Mod Podge saturated brush! (I didn't even know that could happen!)

Here is a picture comparing the old drawers to the newly completed set!

I do like the colors. And there are advantages to NOT being able to see what is in those drawers. But there has GOT to be an easier way...

I am posting this much later in the day than I had planned (Mod Podge has that effect on me!) But at least I didn't break my promise of blogging daily! I am anxious to get to school tomorrow and drop those drawers into place.

Oh, who am I kidding? We both know I will be re-doing that orange drawer before I go to bed...

  2. It turned out great. But I hear your frustrations!! I recently mod podged some pencil boxes and before I took out the dreaded stuff, I sprayed my paper with spray adhesive and stuck it exactly where I wanted it. It was easily repositionnable too! Once that was dry, (only a few minutes), I applied a thin coat of mod podge to seal it all in. Thin coat is the key. Maybe a trick you can use next time...if there's a next time! LOL

  3. Oh boy, I am laughing, but dying for you right now. It looks great, even if it is driving you crazy.

The question I have for you is, how did you get the modge podge out of your eyelashes?

    1. You'll laugh to know I started out in search of a really little comb... No luck there! I ended up putting warm washcloths on my face and pretending I was in a spa. I guess the rest will just have to wear off!

  4. Oh man, way to persevere through that mod podge mess!!! Yikes!! I have to say, I always think it looks so nice when other teachers line those drawers with paper (and cover their file cabinets with pretty contact paper, and hang pretty fabric on the edges of tables...), but I feel like it is all way too much work!! The drawers look great tho--wanna come do mine? ;)

    1. Oh yes, Amy! I'd love to... maybe next summer! And, yes, I agree with you: I will now enjoy other peoples' craftiness and then go back to my room and remember how hard it is to accomplish that! And funny you should mention the file cabinet... I did buy a roll of pretty paper...

  5. I would have put the whole thing to the curb, and then curled up in a ball in the corner. You are far braver than I:).

    1. Don't think THAT didn't cross my mind! And I was channeling you through much of the process... Did you hear me calling for help?

  6. Does it help that I found a splash of my coffee caramel on my glasses this evening? Not the same at Mod Podge in your eyes, I'm sure, but a weird place to find a drop of caramel had hardened.

I'm glad you survived that and enJOYed that you were able to find humor in the process. Oh, and the drawers do look AmAzInG btw.

  7. oh my goodness, you made me laugh so hard!! Not at you but in commiseration over your suffering because I can't even begin to tackle a project with that stuff!! I hate it :) I think they look AWESOME with the colors and I love how your labels coordinate perfectly with them! It looks like a completely different storage unit! And you know what? The hassle of the project will soon be forgotten as you are gazing at this beauty all year!

  10. Well, if it's any consolation ... it looks FABULOUS!!! And you can use it as a character trait lesson for your kids next year - perseverance. ;)
In all honesty, I've had one of those teacher toolbox things that everyone made last year still in its Amazon box in my dining room from last year. Haven't bothered to make it yet. Since you are now the expert, you wouldn't want to mod podge paper into all the drawers for me, would you?? :)

  12. It looks so good! And the little glitch on the last drawer gives it character. We all have a few "missed" spots ourselves, so why shouldn't your drawer? Personally, I'm VERY impressed. I have one like it, and the drawers are all still.....yup, clear.
